Identification

Scolopendra centipedes are large species (60 mm in length, or more) with 21 pairs of legs.

Although there are not any species native to Britain or Ireland, Scolopendra species are occasionally imported accidentally with fruit, potted plants etc.

Distribution and Habitat

Although there are not any species native to Britain or Ireland, Scolopendra species are occasionally imported accidentally with fruit, potted plants, etc, or even inside tourist luggage.

Scolopendra cingulata, a widespread Mediterranean species, is known from southern France (where it is mainly a littoral species). Other species occur around the globe.
