Identification

This pallid species has eyes comprising a small cluster of weakly pigmented ommatidia (eyes). It is similar in general appearance to Cylindroiulus vulnerarius, a species that completely lacks ommatidia.

Distribution and Habitat

This species was first found in Britain at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh in 1987.  It has also been collected from St Andrews Botanic Gardens (Read, Corbet & Jones, 2002). Adults have been collected in March, May and November.

This millipede is endemic to northern Italy where it was originally found in wet grassland (Verhoeff, 1908). It has been reported as an introduction from Scotland (Kime, 1999) and Karlsruhe Palace in Germany.
