Identification

A small pallid centipede to 22mm length and with 51-57 leg pairs. The slender last legs are very different in appearance to the conspicuously swollen ones typical of other Schendyla species.

Distribution and Habitat

A non-native species that was recorded from a greenhouse in Cornwall in 1943. Recent examination of a surviving slide of one of the two specimens found indicates that it is clearly not Schendyla monoeci (but a Geophilus sp.) so that the occurrence of that species in Britain is now considered to be very doubtful (BMIG Newletter 39, pg. 4).

Elsewhere in Europe, S. monoeci has been recorded from the seashore bordering the Alpes-Maritimes in France and from Italy, Monaco and Romania.
